On August 22, 2016 Pinnacle Classical Academy (PCA) began its fourth year of operation serving 588 students in grades K-9. Since the beginning of the school in the fall of 2013, Pinnacle Classical Academy has experienced tremendous community support that has allowed for rapid growth. The school will add a grade level each year and will ultimately serve students in grades K-12 by the 2019-2020 school year.
Pinnacle Classical Academy is a college preparatory school that utilizes a unique and advanced curriculum to prepare all students for success in college and their chosen career. The school’s educational philosophy is based on the three R’s – Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships. This means rigorous coursework, relevant learning activities, and meaningful relationships with teachers and other staff members at the school. These items are all necessary to ensure that every student is successful in school and prepared for life after graduation. This is a bold proposition, but one that is necessary to meet the educational needs of students in a rapidly evolving 21st century society and economy.
The heart of Pinnacle’s K-8 academic experience is based on the highly acclaimed Core Knowledge Curriculum (not to be confused with Common Core), coupled with the advanced Singapore Math program. Classic interdisciplinary classes including art, physical education, music, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) are required for K-8 students and foreign language is introduced for middle and high school students. Pinnacle Classical Academy has the only dedicated STEM lab in the county. Students in the STEM course participate in hands-on application and experiential learning of advanced mathematical and science concepts.
Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, Pinnacle has added high school courses. High school students may choose from two academic pathways, College Preparatory and Advanced Placement that will provide an extremely effective college preparatory experience. In both pathways students will earn an Associate of Science degree at no cost from Cleveland Community College in the College Transfer Program. This means that all students who successfully complete this course of study will earn significant college credit and will graduate from high school with a two-year degree. Students in the Advanced Placement pathway will begin taking a series of selected Advanced Placement classes beginning in the 9th grade. This cohort-based program will provide students with an unparalleled college preparatory experience in the core academic areas of English, Math, Science, and History. The Advanced Placement courses have been carefully selected compliment the Associate of Science program as well as the potential to earn significant additional credit at colleges and universities nationwide.
Since it’s founding, Pinnacle Classical Academy has successfully combined a classical education model with modern technology. Students in middle and high school are part of a one-to-one electronic environment. Each student is assigned a laptop that they take to each class and use throughout the day. This one-to-one program allows students to collaborate on projects and assignments, conduct research, use online tools and applications, and develop written products and presentations. The end result is that students are more engaged in the learning process, develop better technology skills and habits, and become familiar with rapidly emerging methods of instruction and learning.
Student success in a rigorous and challenging environment is the hallmark of Pinnacle Classical Academy. During the 2015-2016 school year PCA students continued to excel in the classroom. In athletics, the PCA 3-D Scholastic Archery team won national recognition with both the elementary and middle school teams winning both state and national championships in 2016. These championships are in addition to the national championship the elementary team won in 2014-2015.
Pinnacle Classical Academy is located at 900 South Post Road in Shelby. The school is currently constructing a new school facility on Joes Lake Road in Shelby that is on schedule to be ready for the 2017-2018 school year.
