Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year

As a child it always seemed that time moved slowly. The weeks took forever. Christmas never would get here. The summers stretched forever. That must be what the older generation always termed “the good old days.” As an adult, time had done some miraculous twisting. The weeks fly by, Christmas comes and goes in the blink of an eye, and the summer lasts mere hours.

Here we are at the beginning of yet another school year. As I have walked around both campuses I am struck by how far the school has come. A new campus, a revamped K-2 campus, over 900 students, and an Associate Degree program have all come to fruition. That is a far cry from a rented building and 278 students.

There is an old saying that states if we are not moving forward then we are moving backwards. Nothing could be more true. As a school we have to keep moving forward – one foot in front of the other each day. If we sit back and get comfortable with our accomplishments then we will become stagnant.

The following is etched on Jack London’s grave:

I would rather be ashes than dust!

I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.

I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

This short paragraph embodies the spirit of Pinnacle. We cannot become hide-bound by bureaucracy, nor stifled by dry- rot from within. We cannot be satisfied with where we are, we can’t sit back and say “good job.”

Moving forward is hard though. It takes work. It takes sustained effort. At times we may fail in the short term, but if we keep at it we will win in the long term. Nothing in a school happens without hard work by all stakeholders. Things do not simply appear – they have to be built. From academic programs to sports to the physical spaces – it all has to be built one piece at a time.

As we move through this year there will be a number of opportunities to help build. There will be times that are tough for our students. There will be times when you may question its worth. In the end if we put one foot in front of the other each day, we will get to where we want to go.

Lets start this year putting one foot in front of the other and marching forward.
